The Term “Choker” in Cricket is usually referred to those fail to capitalise on big & serious occassion after performing on less important events. ICC tournaments often create unforgettable moments for cricket fans. Over the last decade, the debate about big match pressure usually involves two teams: New Zealand national cricket team and South Africa national cricket team.

Both teams regularly build strong squads and perform well in league stages. However, their journeys in knockout matches often decide how fans judge their legacy in global tournaments.

New Zealand delivered an outstanding performance in the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup. They defeated South Africa in a dramatic semifinal and reached the final. However, they lost the final to Australia.

South Africa had a strong campaign in the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup. They reached the semifinal but lost a close match to New Zealand.

2023 ICC Cricket World Cup

South Africa made a strong statement in the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Group Stage and were one of the favourites to win. The team reached the semifinal but lost to Australia and once again missed a place in the final.

2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Final

The Proteas reached the final of the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup after an excellent campaign & were just inches away from lifting the cup as they required just 30 from 30 balls with 6 wickets in hand!. However, they lost the final to India, extending their long wait for an ICC trophy.

2025 ICC Champions Trophy Semi final

In the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, South Africa reached the semifinal but were eliminated after losing to New Zealand national cricket team by 50 runs in the second semifinal on March 5 in Lahore. The defeat once again ended the Proteas’ hopes of reaching another ICC final.

In the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, South Africa reached the semifinal but lost to New Zealand again. The defeat once again ended their hopes before reaching the final.

Final Thoughts

When comparing ICC tournaments in the last decade, New Zealand often reach finals and remain competitive until the last stage. South Africa frequently perform well in the early stages but struggle to convert those performances into titles.

In simple terms, New Zealand repeatedly fall at the final hurdle and usually knock the South Africans out, while the Proteas often fall one step earlier in knockout matches. That difference keeps the debate alive among cricket fans around the world.
