Tournament: Cricket NL Summer League 2025
Formats: T10 | T20 | F40
Captain: Wahidur Rahman
Key Honours:
– Herringshaw Cup Champions (2020)
Born out of ambition and a desire to compete, NL Hurricanes were founded in 2020 by Wahidur Rahman, only player with prior local cricketing experience, at a time when most of his squad was just getting their first taste of competitive cricket in Newfoundland and Labrador. Since then, they’ve built a recognizable presence in the league, with the debut season Herringshaw Cup standing as their breakthrough moment.
While silverware has been lacking for them in outdoor seasons, the Hurricanes have quietly grown into a well-rounded side. Entering 2025, they’re no longer just passionate participants, they’re potential disruptors with an exciting mix of experience, big-hitting talent, and bowling depth.
Top Order Resurgence: Left-Handed Authority & Firepower
Leading from the front, Wahidur Rahman has been the backbone of the Hurricanes since their inception. The club’s all-time leading run scorer, Wahid has amassed over 2000 runs across formats. Opening alongside him is the elegant left-hander Vinai Hingoo. In a short span, Vinai has announced himself with authority, boasting an average of over 45 in outdoor formats. His clean strokeplay and consistency makes him a formidable force in the top order for Hurricanes.
Rahib Ar Rahman brings balance to the top order. With 700+ runs under his belt, Rahib has repeatedly delivered solid starts, providing momentum when the top three click together.
In Puneet Badhini, the Hurricanes possess a true batting engine. A utility top-order and sometimes middle-order player, Puneet has crossed 1000 career runs, often making them count in big moments. His ability to clear boundaries and dominate bowling attacks makes him a lynchpin in the batting setup.
Middle Order Muscle: Raw Talent, Real Promise
The Hurricanes’ middle order this season has been bolstered by the arrival of Arshdeep Singh and Avtar Singh Avi. While still relatively new, both batters have added muscle and depth to the middle overs—building what could soon be a core.
Arnab Barua, the club’s vice-captain, also features in the middle order. With his ability to bat across positions and contribute with the ball, he’s among the most valuable multi-dimensional players in the squad.
Spin Web: Trickery and Control
Spin has always been one of Hurricanes’ strengths.
Off Spin Department
Shakib Ruhul, one of the most dependable spinners in the club’s history, also the second highest wicket taker. He has amassed over 60 wickets in NL outdoor cricket. Yasir Farhad, the youngster entering his debut outdoor season, is the one to watch. With a calm head and tidy action, he’s expected to be a handy asset—particularly in the and T20 format.
Leg Spin Options
Shahriar Kabir and Nahin Ahmed provide wrist-spin variety, while Navdeep Dhillon’s leg spin adds further matchup flexibility. Kabir’s flight and Nahin’s drift will be crucial when attacking in the middle overs.
Pace Attack: Depth, Fire, and Familiar Faces
The Hurricanes’ seam bowling unit may not have household names, but it has plenty of options and punch. Captain Wahidur Rahman is also the club’s leading wicket-taker, having claimed 80+ wickets across outdoor competitions. His ability to break partnerships and contain runs makes him the go-to man when things get tight. Arnab Barua and Puneet Badhini provide pace-bowling balance, often sharing the new ball or acting as first-change bowlers.
The supporting cast includes:
– Imtiaz Jehad and Fahad Ahsan, both right-arm seamers.
– Farhan Masood and Manseeb Jion, who offer pace depth and energy in short bursts.
Wicketkeeping & Fielding Unit
Mohammad Amin, a regular behind the stumps, continues to impress with his glovework. Having already racked up nearly 50 dismissals, Amin is a steady presence behind the stumps. His awareness make him a vital cog, especially in tight matches.
Ajinder Negi, the backup wicketkeeper, also adds depth and versatility to the squad, offering another option should the need arise.
Player to Watch: Yasir Farhad
This season, the spotlight is on Yasir Farhad. The young off-spinner enters his debut summer with plenty of promise. His natural variations and tactical bowling IQ are expected to shine in the shorter formats. If he finds rhythm early, he could become a go-to weapon in the Hurricanes’ bowling arsenal
The NL Hurricanes may have started as the new kids on the block, but five seasons in, they’re anything but inexperienced. With a maturing squad, a settled leadership group, and young talent stepping up, they have all the ingredients to make a serious push in 2025.
Expect them to challenge strongly in all three formats, especially as their bowling unit gains traction and their top order continues to fire. If they click collectively, the Hurricanes could be the surprise package of the summer.
