Iceland made it two wins in as many days with a thrilling 3-wicket victory over Latvia in their second league match of the EURO T20 CUP 2025 at the GOSiR Zielonki Parcele Ground in Warsaw on Friday. With this win, Iceland now sit comfortably at the top of the table after an impressive start to their campaign.
Latvia, playing their first match of the tournament, put up a respectable total of 151/7 in their 20 overs after Iceland sent them in to bat, thanks to a blistering knock from Harsh Chauhan, who remained unbeaten on 82 off just 44 balls. His innings was laced with seven towering sixes and two boundaries and single-handedly held the Latvian innings together after early stumbles.
Iceland’s bowlers shared the load well, with David Cook picking up 2 wickets and Akshay Jotin returning miserly figures of 1/15 in his four overs. Prabhath Weerasooriya and skipper Dushan Bandara also chipped in with key breakthroughs.
In response, Iceland’s chase was anchored by an explosive 83* from the in-form Derick Deonarain, who followed up on his performance from the opening game with another match-winning effort. The left-hander struck five sixes and five fours to guide Iceland home with four balls to spare, despite a late scare from Latvia’s Vijay Thakur, who picked up 3 wickets. Derick also tops the charts for the highest run getter so far in the Euro Cup t20 2025.
Latvia’s bowlers showed fight, especially through Thakur and Chauhan, but lacked support at crucial stages. Iceland lost wickets at regular intervals but Deonarain’s calm under pressure made all the difference and they chased down the target with 4 balls to spare.
With this win, Iceland remain unbeaten and look like early favorites in the tournament, while Latvia will be hoping to bounce back in their next fixture after a tough start to their campaign.
