F40 & T20 Defending Champions eye an all-format sweep in 2025

Few teams in Cricket Newfoundland have displayed the kind of dominance across formats that the NL Mavericks, managed in 2024. With trophies in both the F40 and T20 leagues in 2024 and a top-order that can reduce any run chase to a highlight reel, the Mavericks enter 2025 as the team to beat.

Skippered by the ever-intense yet composed Ranvir Rana, who also leads the provincial side, the Mavericks are a perfect storm of aggression, balance, and leadership.

Top Order Blitz: Fire at the Front

Everything about the Mavericks’ top order screams intent. Captain Ranvir Rana sets the tone with a career T20 strike rate north of 150 and over 100 in F40s — elite numbers that often correlate directly with match wins. His no-fear approach has made him the backbone of the Mavericks’ success, especially when he’s in full flow early in the innings.

His opening partnerships have evolved with time, but few can forget the 172-run carnage he and Taran Chahal unleashed off just 81 balls chasing 183 — a partnership now etched in club folklore. Taran, a like-for-like aggressor, matches Rana’s tempo and brings edge-of-the-seat entertainment every time he opens. Rana has recently opened the innings with Mukul Dhawan, who has transformed himself from a frontline bowler to a full-time batter now.

At No. 3, the composed Amit Negandhi has reinvented himself. Once an opener, Amit’s shift to first drop has been transformative. His 150 last season not only sealed game but also his importance in anchoring innings while maintaining momentum. The top three, in many ways, reflect the Mavericks’ philosophy: attack first, adjust later.

Middle Order Backbone: Dual Rana Impact

If the top three are thunder, the middle order brings the storm. Deepak Rana, sharing both name and playing style with his captain, provides explosive backup in the second half of innings. With a strike rate above 130 and six fifties across formats, Deepak is a proven match-winner — one of which was the final against NL Wolves.

Alongside him is longtime wicketkeeper-batter Maulik Patel. With over 50 dismissals, Maulik’s glovework speaks volumes, but it’s his steady hand with the bat that offers stability in Mavericks’ middle order. Others like Shubham Sharma, Shivam Bhardwaj, and Sahil Pahwa round out a sensible core.

Bowling Arsenal: Power & Partnerships

Bowling has long been a stronghold for the Mavericks, and this year is no different. The twin Rana pace duo of Deepak and Ranvir, lead the attack with a combined tally of over 100 wickets. Both medium pacers specialize in breaking partnerships and strangling, one in the initial overs and the other in the middle.

Deepak leads the club charts with 65+ wickets, while Ranvir is close behind at 52. Ajit Brar, with over 30 wickets himself, adds seam balance and control, particularly in the powerplay and death. Mukul Dhawan, also gives skipper Rana an edge as he can bowl when needed, dossing over 50 outdoor wickets.

Other newer faces like Shivam Bhardwaj, Sahil Pahwa, or veteran Shashi Parbhane, with over 50 outdoor wickets, ensure the load is well distributed — giving Ranvir tactical options based on matchups and conditions.

Spin Threat: Watch for Harsh

The x-factor for 2025 may well be Harsh Prajapati, the left-arm spinner making quiet waves in club cricket. With over 30 wickets in outdoor leagues and an economy just above 6.5, Harsh brings both control and attacking threat — particularly valuable in T10s and T20s, where taking pace off the ball is critical.

His variations and angles complement the pace-heavy attack and could prove decisive on slower tracks or during middle-over squeezes.

Fielding & Wicketkeeping: Steady Hands

Behind the stumps, Maulik Patel continues to be a rock. His experience and sharp glovework give the Mavericks an edge in dismissals, while also offering tactical insights from behind the wickets. With over half a century of dismissals, Patel remains behind the wickets.

Tactical Outlook: Built to Defend, Designed to Destroy

With elite top-order firepower, a dual-Rana bowling strike force, and one of the most flexible lineups in the league, the NL Mavericks are title contenders in all three formats.

The only gap in their resume is T10 silverware — but given their squad depth, momentum from 2024, and a captain in peak form, 2025 could be the year they complete the set.
